I think annointing this guy a 'major hip hop star' is a bit premature, regardless of the hype from the media. I listened to a few of his tracks and I didn't hear anything original. Some decent beats and solid production but lyrically, he raps about the same things as every other rapper out there, the only difference being a few Pittsburgh references. The fact that he refers to PA as 'Pistolvania' cracks me up.

I may sound a bit harsh here but anytime a Pittsburgh rapper gets some coverage people start thinking they will hit it big nationally. Ever hear of Strict Flow? I think they were from Alderdice as well. They were okay talent wise but a few years ago people in Pittsburgh called them 'the first hip hop stars from the burgh'. I think all of the hype got to their head as my one good friend, who used to DJ here, said they a bit arrogant. Well, I never hear anything about Strict Flow anymore. It would be nice to have a better hip hop scene here in the burgh but on a national level we won't see a major star come from here unless you get an artist with some originalality.

My favorite hip-hop artists do not get much radio play but they are original and I've seen them a few times at Metropol and other Pittsburgh venues. Check out The Roots out of Philadelphia.

The Roots put on the best live show out of anyone in hip hop - hands down. Live instruments, which is rare in this genre, and they have thought provoking, original lyrics. They've been around since the mid 90's and are still putting out hit albums every couple years, which are one of the few albums I actually still buy these days.
