Just because the comment thread on the last post is getting pretty long, here's something different:
I'm in the SF Bay Area today. Here's a link to Yelp reviews of Giordano Bros., a North Beach restaurant that sells "Pittsburgh style" sandwiches.

I just got back from a vacation in Crete. On the last day, we decided we wanted to go out and get some real Greek gyros. At the lunch place where we stopped we ordered "gyros bread and gyros" from the menu assuming we'd get something close to the familiar gyros wrapped in a pita.
Instead what we got was a huge hoagie (hero) roll, piled with gyros, tzatziki, lettuce, tomato, and french fries!! Whoever says it's a pittsburgh thing needs to tell that to the folks in Kounoupidianá!
(The gyros was delicious, BTW. Not the ground-and-pressed stuff you get here, but actual chunks of lamb and/or beef.)
