China Millman Is Everywhere

Ground round:

China Millman is starting a column to cover Pittsburgh's expanding coffee beat.

On the one hand, this is as sure a sign as we've seen in years (at least since the emergence of the Cupcake Class) that Pittsburgh remains several years behind the nation's cultural cutting edge.

On the one hand, maybe it's a good thing after all that Pittsburgh lags like this. We've watched coffee booms and coffee busts, and we've learned other regions' lessons. No over-caffeination for the Burgh.

I would posit the expansion of "coffee culture" and the general epicurean sophistication in Pittsburgh has more to do with changing demographics than adopting trends late. It is noticeable, isn't it? Pittsburgh has always been a great place to cook, but, until a few years ago, a middling place to eat. Finding a Mio or Legume Bistro or even a Six Penn would have been unthinkable 15 years ago. All we need now is a Ruhlman and Pittsburgh can shed its fries and slaw on a sandwich reputation.

Watching all the staid, old favorites of yesteryear joining their patrons in pine boxes while funky joints with a Farm-to-Table ethos pop up all over is an interesting metaphor for the region. I wish somebody would create a snazzy, Brookings Institute-esque web mash up that tracked stuff like fancy coffee sales, places with decent beer on tap, eateries with pepper mills on the table, and so on in the area.

Reminds me of the old joke: where do you want to be when the world ends? Pittsburgh, because everything happens [5, 10, 20] years later there....
