The Athens of the Alleghenies

Following a casual conversation on my travels last week I received the following image, which I am told represents the master plan proposed in 1912 for the Western University of Pennsylvania -- now known as the University of Pittsburgh. (The Carnegie Library hosts its own copy of the image.)

Imagine . . no grey Gothic tower dominating Oakland. Instead, a neoclassical Acropolis!

Evidently that had a Mike's Marbleopolis in the region back then.

Part of this vision was actually built. I think Old Engineering Hall, Eberly Hall, Mineral Industries Building, and Pennsylvania Hall, were all built to conform to this plan. MIB is gone now, and I think Pennsylvania is too.

I've grown to like the Cathedral of Learning over the years. Perhaps because it is so iconic.
