Pitt and UPMC in Italy

Pitt and UPMC are partnering with the Italian government to build a $400 million research facility in Sicily. This rates only modest coverage in the Post-Gazette. This is a huge deal for Pittsburgh. Read the full press release.

Both the Post-Gazette and the Tribune-Review gave this story the visibility it deserves. Apologies and thanks to the commenters who pointed out that I slighted our local media.

The Trib put it on the front page:

Will the trains run on time?

I'm not sure if this is big news or not. I'm puzzled as to its implications, both for the short and long term.

There will be NO IMPACT with local jobs.

And, this is all about jobs. There were two quotes. They seem to clash.

And, as I see it, it could be more like Alcoa moving to NY. Bad news.

Presently, there are a good number of people who come to Pittsburgh, from around the world, to get the excellent care and treatments -- from some of the best in the world. Perhaps this means that many will be able to by-pass the trip to Pittsburgh for their by-pass operation now.

"Modest coverage in the Post-Gazette"? As they say in Italy (I guess): Prego! It was on our front page, above the fold, right column

In fairness to Mike, newspaper web sites, which many of us rely on for our news, do not always reflect how a story was played in the print editions.

I emailed John A. this morning and mentioned the point that Jonathan confirms. I have a post in mind that talks about this and related online media issues.
