Casino Journal

The Post-Gazette is dipping its toes into the blogosphere. Come on in, the water's fine! (How's that for mixing metaphors?) Welcome to Bill Toland's Casino Journal.

Photo via Chris B., who shot it at a conference recently. Timely, eh? For branding mavens out there, a new slogan emerges. Pittsburgh: Monte Carlo on the Mon. (The Commenters should have a field day with this. Have fun!)

Hmm, this could be bigger than even "Hollywood on the Mon." But the "Monte Carlo" analogy may be too pretentious for the folks around here -- why not, "Pittsburgh: Atlantic City on the Ohio"? Pretty catchy, eh? And we'll need a first class slogan to go with it, so I suggest we appropriate the one Atlantic City abandoned: "America's Playground." While it didn't exactly fit Atlantic City, what with all the murders and so forth, it certainly applies here, e.g., the Norman Rockwell portrait of our citizens dozing on benches in Market Square -- some of whom are very hungover; our abundant river activities (specifically, the occasional barge trudging up the Mon, not to mention the occasional drowning incident); our major league baseball and hockey -- well, those last two don't really count, do they?

Other suggestions include "City of Brotherly Love" and "The Big Apple."

America's Playground... Funny. You think you might need at least ONE swing set in the Golden Triangle to use that slogan.

I just wonder if the State Police -- or the private security forces (employed by the casino operators) would ever permit such a 'gambling night' to occur in the city such as the one featured by the Chamber. Spoof or no spoof -- the lock down might be serious for locals like our midget football team and its night at the races, etc.

How about "America's Next Branson, MO."

Pittsburgh's turn to casinos is so low rent it makes me sick. While we're at it, let's just build the next skyscraper out of stacked double-wide trailers, give all new residents casino tokens and a carton of Newports, and ask some Gabriel's cashier to design an English lesson plan for the schools.
